General Overview
Corporations need to protect themselves from the legal liabilities associated with unfettered Internet in the workplace. With the Eyeblocker Enterprise Router Solution, enterprise organizations can better understand and regulate Internet usage in the office place. Importantly, these solutions further promote productivity within the workplace by blocking common employee distractions during the workday, such as Instant Messaging applications. Eyeblocker helps organizations regain lost productivity and stop Internet abuse.
Technical Overview
The Eyeblocker Router Solution is an inline device that intercepts outgoing HTTP, IM, P2P, FTP, and Mail requests. It has be ability to handle up to 45 Mbit/s of Internet traffic while communicating with the Eyeblocker Policy Server for each request. The Eyeblocker Router Solution is a Linux based Layer-7 filtering appliance that does not need the packets to be returned the same way they where sent, making it ideal with asymmetric routing environments.
The Eyeblocker Router is black-box type software this is installed on a dedicated server. It's only function is to intercept outgoing Internet traffic requests and then send these requests to a locally installed Policy server. The Policy servers' role is to ensure that the requested URL or Protocol is appropriately classified and then either allowed or denied.
Functional Overview
Instant Message Blocking
Enterprise corporations can block common Instant Messaging applications such as MSN, ICQ and Yahoo Instant Messenger. In addition, time-based controls can be applied to IM applications to limit the use of these tools (i.e. on an employees lunch hour). This ensures that employees use the computer at appropriate times for the right purposes (e.g. work and research) and then have specified times for messaging.
File Sharing Blocking
The Eyeblocker Router Solution blocks common file sharing applications, such as Kazaa, eDonkey, and WinMX. These applications are used for the illegal distribution of copyrighted music, movies, games, as well as pornographic material. Moreover, if corporations choose to allow limited use of these applications on the computer, time blocking can be enabled to restrict the use of the applications.
Distributed Administration
IT Administrators can give group or departmental heads control over the sections and employees for whom they are responsible. All policies can be reviewed by the Network Administrator to ensure that groups and departments are in-line with current enterprise Internet usage policies. Distributing the administration of the Filter reduces the load for IT departments and empowers other levels of management in the company to enforce control of Internet usage policies.
Web-Based Administration
The web-based administration of the solution gives enterprises the ability to manage the Filtering solution and its policies anytime and anywhere.
Global, Group, and Per-User Filtering
With multiple levels of filtering, enterprise organizations can enforce global policies across the entire network or manage multiple policies based on groups or users. Moving users and groups to other existing Internet usage policies, or creating new Internet usage policies, is quick and simple.
Scheduled Filtering and Filtering Overrides
Network Administrators can manage time of day settings for the filtering and adjust the filtering policies as required. Additionally, groups and individual users can be set to override the filter (although silent tracking can still be performed).
Silent Tracking
Utilizing silent tracking, enterprise organizations can survey, examine, and understand Internet usage within the company, and establish filtering policies based on the information. Administrators can determine which users are accessing which sites.
Granular Categorization
Corporations can choose from over 42 categories of filtering for the company. Moreover, customized Whitelists and Blacklists can be created to meet the specific filtering polices of the organization.
Whitelists and Blacklists
Corporations can create lists of acceptable or unacceptable websites. In those instances where the company wishes to override the categorization of a site, the Administrators could Whitelist (allow) or Blacklist (disallow) the site.
Comprehensive Reporting
With the Eyeblocker reporter included with the filtering solution, enterprise corporations have the ability to track, view and report on Internet activities within the organization. Reports can be exported to standard programs including Crystal Reports and Excel. Some of the reporting features include:
- Reports can be run on:
- User IDs, User Groups, IP Addresses, dates and times
- Site URL or IP address (destinations), site categories, whether sites were accessed or blocked, whether site visit violates policy violations
- Reports are capable of displaying all visits containing a queried keyword or URL
- Reports can be executed to display policy violations only
